Tele-Modules

Module I- Introduction to Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Module One has three segments: Segment one gives an in-depth perspective of basic Oriental medical theory and doctrine. We will cover the Vital Substances and Eight Principals; as well as terminology and concepts intrinsic to Oriental medicine. Segment two provides an understanding of the matrix of the Chinese herbal materia medica. Crude herb examples from each therapeutic category are accompanied by complete assays. Segment three provides coverage of the Pattern Identification of the Zang Fu (the five Yin and coupled Yang organs). Patterns are a constellation of signs and symptoms indicating the disharmony within a patient’s body, mind and spirit. Etiology, pathology, acupuncture and herbal prescriptions for treatment will be discussed.

Module I meets for 8 weeks from:
SEPTEMBER 23- NOVEMBER 11 2008

Prerequisite reading:
Chapters 1-30 in
The Foundations of Chinese Medicine
*Prerequisite for Modules II-VI completion of Module I or equivalent knowledge

• Module Format:
1.5 hours by telephone per week for 8 weeks.

The first hour will be lecturing, the remaining 1/2 hour will be reserved for questions and discussion of patients.

Included with Module I-samples of 20 common Chinese herbs with herb assays

Module II- Pain; Diagnosis and Treatment
Module II explores three major areas of pain; muscular skeletal pain, headaches, and digestive pain, Etiology, pathology and differential diagnoses are presented, as well as herbal treatment protocol.

Module II meets for 5 weeks from:

NOVEMBER 18- DECEMBER 16
Prerequisite reading:
Chapters 1, l4, 15, 16, 23 and 24 in The Practice of Chinese Medicine.


Module III- Upper Respiratory Diseases and Eczema
Module V addresses the Traditional Chinese Medical diagnosis and treatment of allergies, sinusitis, rhinitis; asthma, common colds and eczema. A wide variety of formulaeare available to treat these diseases. We focus on discerning appropriate application of similar formulas.

JANUARY 6- FEBRUARY 3

Module IV- Chronic Fatigue & Digestive Disorders: Differentials Diagnosis and Treatment
Module III is presented in two segments. Segment one covers differential diagnosis, Oriental medical theory and herb treatment of chronic fatigue. Segment two includes diagnosis using as both herbal and dietary treatments for digestive disorders. Students will learn how to differentiate between seemingly similar formulas for treatment of chronic fatigue and digestive disorders.

FEBRUARY 10- MARCH 10
Prerequisite reading: Chapters 12, 17,18, 19 & 25, in The Practice of Chinese Medicine,

Module V-Gynecology: Physiology, Pathology and Herbology
This is an in-depth presentation of the physiology, diagnosis and herbal treatment of women's diseases according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Disorders presented are dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, breast disease, infertility, vaginitis, and menopausal symptoms.

Module V meets for 6 weeks from:
MARCH 17- APRIL 21
Prerequisite reading:
Chapters 31. 32, & 33, in The Practice of Chinese Medicine.
NOTE: According to TCM, accurate diagnosis of non-gynecological disorders in women requires a fundamental understanding of the unique patterns of the reproductive organs. Therefore, this module is recommended for all practitioners, not exclusively for those specializing in Gynecology.

Module VI- Psyche and Soma: Understanding Mental-Emotional Disorders and Insomnia
This module of the series unravels the Oriental concept of the Five Spirits. We concentrate particularly on the influence of Shen, Po and Hun on our mental-emotional balance and sleep cycles. Treatment protocols are included in the discussion.
